Searching for new trails

Die Saison 2010/2011 ist abgeschlossen und wir beginnen mit den Vorbereitungen für nächstes Jahr. Wir haben die Scooter genommen und haben eine wunderbare 130 km Trainingsrunde in den Bergen für nächste Saison erkundet. Wir freuen uns drauf die Runde nächstes Jahr mit den Hunden zu fahren ;)))


The season 2010/2011 is over and we start preparing and planning already for next year. We took the snowmobiles and discover a beautiful 130 km trainingsround in the mountains for next season. We are looking foreward to drive that with our dogs next year ;)))

Nicht nur Hunde fahren macht Spass!!! / Dogdriving is not the only fun we have!!!

Unser Super-Tchmil hatte schon zum 4. Mal Besuch von einer Dame dieses Frühjahr. Eine der Ladies war ja unsere eigene Jaja. Nun waren über das Wochenende Solveig und Knut Skår von Bodö bei uns um ihre Ronja mit Tchmil zu decken. Hoffentlich kommen da viele schöne Welpen bei raus, wenn es genug werden wollen wir einen davon nehmen. Ronja stammt von unserem alten Robert ab, was man an ihr auch gut sehen kann. Und übrigens, Jaja scheint auch in 2½ Wochen Welpen zu bekommen, sie wird langsam kugelrunt.
Es war auch mal wieder sehr lustig mit Solveig und Knut den Abend zu verbringen und ihre alten Geschichten vom Finnmarkslauf aus den 80er Jahren zu hören :)))

Our super-Tchmil got for the 4th time a visit from a girl this spring. One of the ladies was our own Jaja. This weekend there were Solveig and Knut skår from Bodö with her female Ronja here to breed with Tchmil. We hope there will be a lot of nice puppies, if there are enough, we will take one of the pupps. Ronja is a daughter from our old Robert, and you can really see it. And by the way, Jaja seems to get pupps in 2½ week, she gets round now around her stomach.
It was also very nice to spend the evening with Solveig and Knut and listen to their old stories from Finnmarkslopet in the 80th :)))

Pasvik Trail 2011

Der Pasvik Trail war das zweite Rennen für unsere 20 Monate alten Hunde. Zwischen dem Troms Quest und dem Pasvik haben wir all die Sachen geübt mit denen Katy so Probleme hatte. Überholen, recht und links und head-on-passing. Ich ging mit 13 Hunden an den Start, Jaja habe ich ja zu Hause gelassen, sie ist hoffentlich schwanger. Die Hunde waren recht relaxt und so ging der Start problemlos. Die offene Klasse wurde auf dem See direkt vom Auto aus gestartet. Nach 20 km hatte ich die 4 vor mit gestarteten Teams alle ohne Probleme überholt. Dann kam eine 90 Grad Rechtkurve mit anschließender steiler Abfahrt. Da muss May Conny ihr Team verloren haben, denn ca. 1 km weiter sah ich ihr Team hinter mir ohne May Conny auf dem Schlitten. Ich war auf einem kleinen See, also keine Möglichkeit mein Team richtig zu sichern. Die beiden Anker hielten aber anfangs und so konnte ich ihr Team fangen und auch da den Anker setzten. Einer von ihren Hunden wurde hinter dem Schlitten her geschleift, er muss in der Abfahrt gestolpert sein. Ihm ist aber zum Glück nichts weiter passiert. Dann sah ich Didrik mit May Conny auf dem Schlitten um die Ecke biegen und plötzlich sauste mein Team wieder los. Die Anker bremsten die Fahrt zum Glück etwas und so konnte ich mein Team mit einem Zwischenspurt erreichen. Dann ging May Connys Team wieder los und ich stand plötzlich auf zwei Schlitten mit einem Hundeknoten davor. Zum Glück war dann aber May Conny da um die Hunde auseinander zu knoten und ich konnte weiter fahren. Meine Hunde waren danach etwas irritiert und liefen 15 km nicht wie gewohnt. Dann sausten sie aber auf einmal wieder los und schnell ging es an der russischen Grenze entlang in den Checkoint Vaggatem. Im Checkpoint lief alles gut, die Hunde haben gleich gefressen und auch gut geschlafen. Die Veterinäre gaben für alle 13 Hunde das ok zum weiterfahren.

Pasvik Trail was the second race for our 20 month old dogs. Between the Troms Quest and the Pasvik we trained all the things Katy had a lot of problems with. Passing other teams, left and right and head-on-passing. I was with 13 dogs at the starting line, Jaja was left at home, and hopefully she gets some puppies in one month. The dogs were relatively relaxed and the start was without any problems. The open class was started at the lake directly from the cars. After 20 km I had passed all the 4 teams who were starting in front of me without problems. Then there was a 90 degrees curve to the right followed by a steep step down. There it must be the part where May Conny lost her team, 1 km further I saw her team but without May Conny at the sled. I was on a small lake, no possibility to park my team safe. But anyway, the snowhooks got grip and so I could catch her team and set her snowhook, too. One of her dogs was dragged behind the sled, he must have stumbled in the downhill. But luckily nothing had happened to him. Then I saw Didrik with May Conny on the sled and suddenly my team was starting again. The snowhooks brake the pace a bit down, so it was possible to me to catch my team with a short sprint. Then was May Connys team starting and so I found myself standing on two sleds with a dogtangle in front of me. Luckily came May Conny to separate the two teams and I could move on. My dogs was little irritated after that what happened and they didn’t go with the normal speed for the next 15 km. But then they speed up and we breeze besides the Russian border to the checkpoint Vaggatem. Everything was fine in the checkpoint, the dogs were eating and fall directly into sleep. The veterinarians gave the ok for all 13 dogs to move on.

Beim Verlassen vom Checkpoint Vaggatem hatte ich eine Schrecksekunde. Die Hunde bogen auf die Straße anstatt sie zu überqueren. Aber zum Glück waren da viele Helfer die den Hunden den richtigen Weg gezeigt haben. 500 Meter weiter kam Didi auf die Idee ein bewohntes Haus zu besuchen, die Einfahrt war so schön geräumt…Mit einigem Chaos kam ich wieder auf den richtigen Trail, Junghunde sind immer für eine Überraschung gut ;)) Das rechts und links ging zwar besser als beim Troms Quest, aber perfekt sieht anders aus :) Auf dem Weg nach Neiden bemerkte ich das zwei Hunde steif in den Muskeln wurden und habe das Team stark gebremst. Vor allen in den Abschnitten mit losem Schnee. Die Strecke war sehr schön, es ging immer an der Grenze zu Finnland entlang. Teils war die Spur gut, teils mit Zuckerschnee und vor allem super markiert. Die vor mit gestarteten Teams habe ich wieder ohne Probleme überholt. Im Checkpoint Neiden war ich als viertes Team, die Hunde haben wieder sofort gefressen und wollten auch gleich schlafen. Tchmil und Klödi waren ja den ganzen Weg über schon steif gewesen, sie haben dann von mir eine gründliche Massage erhalten. Ich musste sie aber trotzdem aus dem Team nehmen. Hinault hatte nach der Pause ein dickes Gelenk und war somit auch draußen. Luis war nur geplant bis Neiden im Team zu bleiben, er ist der Jüngste von allen und sehr klein und schmächtig. Die Tierärzte waren darüber überrascht weil er keine Beschwerden hatte und noch super aussah.

With leaving the checkpoint Vaggatem I had a scare-second. The dogs went onto the road instead of going straight over it. But luckily there were a lot of assistance who showed the right way to the dogs. 500 meters further had Didi the brilliant idée to visit a house, the gateway was so nice cleared from the snow…With a lot of chaos I came again on the right track, youngsters are always good for some surprising ;)) It was working better with the commands left and right than under Troms Quest, but we are far away from perfect :) On the way to Neiden I saw that two dogs got stiff muscles and slowed the team down. Especially in the parts with loose snow. The trail was very nice, the whole way was besides the Finnish border. Partly the trail was good, partly with sugarsnow, but all the way very good marked. I passed the teams who were starting before me without any problems. I reached Neiden as the 4th team , the dogs were eating directly and went to sleep. Tchmil and Klödi were stiff in the muscles the whole way and so they got a long massage from me. But I had to drop them anyway. Hinault had after the rest a sore wrist, so he was dropped, too. I had already planned to drop Luis in Neiden, he is the youngest in the team and very small and slight. The vets were surprised about my decision because he looked really good and had no problems.

Nach drei Stunden Schlaf ging es mit 9 Hunden dann auf die letzte Etappe nach Kirkenes. Ich hatte mir schon gedacht dass diese letzte Etappe schwer werden wird für unsere Hunde. Ihnen fehlt noch das Stehvermögen. Nach 10 km kam Milos an mir vorbei geflogen und Sean fing an zu humpeln. Ich bremste das Team mal wieder damit sie mithalten konnte. So lief sie auch weiter in Lead. Nach 30 km kam Ole vorbeigesaust, dann 5 km weiter wollte Sean nicht mehr Lead gehen. Dafür sprang ihr Bruder Fränk ein und hat es souverän zusammen mit Schwester Didi bis zum Ende geführt. Sean lief im Team was zur Folge hatte das ich vor allem bei den Abfahrten stark gebremst habe um es ihr leichter zu machen. Etwa nach der Hälfte kam May Conny dann vorbei, meine Hunde liefen weiterhin gut in ihrem Tempo. 10 km vor dem Ziel ging es dann für Sean nicht mehr weiter und sie musste in den Sack was nur unter Protest geschah. Dann ging es die letzten 10 km ohne Probleme bis ins Ziel. Fazit: Alles hat super geklappt, die Youngsters haben mal wieder eine tolle Show geliefert und wir sind mächtig stolz auf sie! Ziel der ganzen Saison und der Rennen war es den Hunden möglichst viele positive Erfahrungen zu geben. Und wir denken dass wir das Ziel erreicht haben!

After 3 hours good sleep I went with 9 dogs on to the last stretch to Kirkenes. I thought before that it will be tough for our young dogs. They don´t have the stamina yet. After 10 km Milos flight by with his team and Sean starts limping. So I slowed down the team that she managed it to hang on. So she could manage it to stay in lead. After 30 km Ole passed me, then after 5 km Sean don´t want to go in lead anymore. So her brother Fränk stands in for her and took place in lead besides his sister Didi. Sean was in the team, so I had to slow the dogs down to make it easier for her, especially in the downhills. Half way to the finish line I was passed by May Conny. My dogs were moving on in their own speed. 10 km before the finish it was not working anymore for Sean, she had to take place in the basket. This was done under her protest. The last 10 km to the finish line was fine and without further problems. Conclusion: Everything was working really great, the youngsters delivered a great performance and we are very proud of them! Goal of the whole season and the races was to give the dogs as much positive experience as possible. And we think that we reached the goal!

Number 3!!!

It was an unespected third place in the end! We knew that our dogs are fast, but in this age they cannot hold the speed over a whole distance of 300 km. So we are more than satisfied and very very proud at our dogs! They are great! Thanks to Ralph and Inger Mari, Nina and Björnar and Lill that they breed and sold us so great dogs. They were 8 weeks old when we got them and nobody was knowing how the education will be with puppies and without adult teacher. But it worked out well, and it´s still more than fun to be out with this "young wild ones" (like Heiner called them ;))

Jörg called me. He had Sean in the basket because she was limping. But she thought that is not the way she want to travel and jumped out of the bag. So she is in the team again, but Jörg is slowing the team down that she can hang with it. May-Conny was passing him but that´s normal if you stay on the brake :) Now he is on the same part of the trail that they were driving yesterday for the way out of Kirkenes to Vaggatem. I´m happy that our youngster run so fine!

I spoke with Jörg and he told me that he was passed by Milos Gonda after 10 km - like we expected. Milos has good drive and speed in his team, looks like he is the winner from Pasvik Trail 2011. Ole Wingren passed Jörg, too. Our youngsters are going also well, and we knew before that they are still young and without any experience. So Franzi, Sean is not the first to set her paws under the finish-line ;)) Maybe another year!

Neiden

Jörg was arriving early in the morning in Neiden. The trail was very deep and soft and in the downhills he was slowing the dogs down a lot. Jörg was very happy with the dogs and how they work. So after 3 hours of good sleep he went on with 9 dogs. He set out Luis what was planned. He is the youngest in the team and a small and thin boy. He was looking good and eating, but anyway it was a good decision to set him out. Tchmil and Klödi had to be dropped for stiff muscels. That is often with hard working young dogs when they have not that much muscels like adult ones. Hinault was leaving the team because of a sore wrist. So we hope that the 9 wild ones will rock the sled to Kirkenes and that all 10 have a lot of fun. I´m now in Kirkenes at the place of our friends Franzi and Michi. About 15.30 I will start the 20 km to downtown Kirkenes and wait for Jörg. The last stage is about 100 km, that´s a long journey for our youngsters!
